Barksdale AFB in the 1980s
A collection of old photos taken mostly in the early 1980s. At that time, Barksdale was home to a large force of Strategic Air Command B-52G Stratofortresses and KC-135A Stratotankers assigned to the 2d Bombardment Wing. It was also the first --- and initially the only --- base for the U.S. Air Force's newest tanker, the KC-10A Extender. Tenant organizations included the Air Force Reserve's 917th Tactical Fighter Group, flying the A-10A Thunderbolt II; Military Airlift Command's 1401st Military Airlift Squadron with a detachment of T-39A Sabreliners; and a handful of T-37A trainers assigned to the Accelerated Copilot Enrichment (ACE) program for use by SAC copilots in gaining aircraft commander experience and flight proficiency. And on most days, at least one or two interesting aircraft could be found visiting Barksdale's transient aircraft ramp.
